Introduction to Technical Diving Seminar

Bill Lester - Lead Instructor with Southeastern Technical DiversOn Saturday, June 2nd there were two major events at Adventures in Diving:

  • From 12:00pm to 1:00pm, there was a preview of the video Diving the USS Oriskany by Bill Lester

  • From 1:00pm to 4:00pm, Bill presented a free seminar, entitled Introduction to Technical Diving.

Many divers have heard of Technical Diving, but few actually know much about this very advanced form of SCUBA diving. Bill Lester , the Lead Instructor of Southeastern Technical Divers is one of those few and Adventures in Diving were honored to welcome him to our facility to present this free lecture.

The USS Oriskany (CV/CVA-34)

Bill also previewed his latest video production about the former US Navy Aircraft Carrier, the USS Oriskany, which was sent to the bottom on 17 May, 2006 as the largest ship ever intentionally sunk as an artificial reef. The flight deck of Oriskany currently lies at a depth of 130 ft (40 m), and its carrier island rises to 70 ft (21 m). While the island structure is accessible to recreational divers, anywhere below the flight deck is beyond recreational diving range. Through Bill's video documentary, however, we witnessed the sinking and joined them on a dive to more than 170 feet, deep into the heart of this famous ship.
